Mineral vs Acrylic: visual differences between the two aspects of colour

Date

In the world of interior decoration, colour is never simply a colour. It is substance, reflection, depth and light that interacts with the surface that channels and transforms it. The same shade, replicated with different kinds of products – for example, acrylic and mineral products – results in a completely different visual and tactile finish. In other words, the same colour applied with a mineral finish will never have the same visual impact as one applied with an acrylic-based finish, simply because the binder is different by nature.

With the assistance of our colour expert, Leonardo Pelagatti, we will explore the main differences in this article between the two major product categories for wall finishes (mineral and acrylic), with a particular focus on the unusual visual effects through colour.

Leonardo Pelagatti is the head of the Colour Design Centre, coordinator of the colorimetry team, and member of the centre of excellence for tintometric systems of the Cromology group, which includes the Viero Decoratives brand.

Mineral products for a “wavy”, “distressed” and natural-looking colour

Mineral products have natural binders like lime and silicates. Their main feature is their interaction with light: they do not rest on the surface but blend with the substrate creating an unusual visual depth. The result is vibrant shades and an almost three-dimensional effect, that can seem as if “moves”. This effect is characterised by variations in light and dark and tone in the portion applied, that gives a unique vitality to the surface, almost as if each colour variation was a breath conveying a sense of movement. The wavy effect is particularly evident in lime-based products, while it is less evident in silicate-based products. These variations – together with the combination of substrate, temperature, humidity and painter’s skill – make each wall personal and one-of-a-kind. Another typical feature of mineral products is their “powdery” and “distressed” effect. Even when the product has been freshly applied, a slight patina can already be seen, almost like a veil that is reminiscent of ancient, eye-catching surfaces. This effect helps to create an intimate, warm atmosphere for rooms that aim to combine tradition and a modern feel.

Acrylic products for a precise, uniform and long-lasting colour effect

The wavy, powdery effect of mineral products is starkly contrasted by the uniform precision and smooth, compact finish of acrylic products. When used as a synthetic polymer binder, acrylic colours result in solid, uniform colours and allow complete control over the end result, ensuring an impeccable finish. The surface is uniform, continuous and even. The colour is exactly as expected, with no colour variations. This makes acrylic products ideal for modern, technical settings where high aesthetic precision is required and the colour retains its intensity over time.

Mineral vs Acrylic, colour space and limitations

To sum up, the big difference between acrylic and mineral products is showcased in the final appearance of the colour, “as can be seen, for example, by comparing the final effect of products such as the Marmorini Viero Decoratives range and the Oltre decorative system colour chart, where the shades are consistent but the final effect is clearly different”.

Another key aspect to consider is the colour space, i.e. the colour gamut that can be created with the two types of product. Acrylic products have a wide range of colours and guarantee durability. Conversely, the colour gamut of mineral products is limited. This is due to the different chemical composition: in mineral products, the resin content is minimal or absent, which reduces the ability to absorb colours. The white, blended nature of the material also tends to make colours considerably lighter.

Make a well-informed choice based on the visual effect you are looking for

In short, there is no one option better than the other. The choice between mineral and acrylic products depends on the desired visual effect and setting where it will be applied. Acrylic products are the ideal option for uniform, precise surfaces while mineral products offer a vivid and authentic appearance, perfect for anyone who is looking for a personal and unique result. Understanding these differences lets you make the most of the potential of each material and create rooms that fully comply with the design expectations. Bonus idea? In projects that combine modern elements with textured, artisanal details, a contrast in the visual result of the same shade used with various products on different walls can be particularly interesting.
